Our Chickens
Actually, the very first animals on our little farm were the chickens. My grandmother had always told me about the chickens they had growing up and how fresh the eggs were. It made me always want to try some. The deal was that Mary Ellen didn't want an ugly chicken house so we built a small scale model of our house for the chickens to live in. It has the same siding, windows, and roof as our house. I don't think the chickens can tell the difference, but Baby Goat loves it.

The first chickens we had were Anconas, from the region of Italy where Rick's mother was born. We've moved on to a mixed flock, with everything from Rhode Island Reds, Cochins, Barred Rocks, Easter Egg Chickens to Bantams and Game Cocks. Our chickens have the run of the place. Several think that they belong in the house with us. They help us keep down our fly and tick population around the farm. And there is nothing like those fresh, free range eggs which come in all kinds of wonderful colors and shapes.

Here's a good shot of some of the girls including Tina Turner. (Center-Middle)

Come visit and say hello to the girls: Greybeard, Jello, Tina Turner, Slippers and all the rest. Remember to bring some stale bread or other scraps. Our chickens will love you for it. For us, they are the best deal of all the animals; we put garbage in one end, and get eggs out the other.
